The Thornton Park District is one of Orlando’s most vibrant and charming neighborhoods, celebrated for its European-style streets, walkable layout, and proximity to the iconic Lake Eola Park. With its colorful mix of locally-owned shops, eclectic dining options, and community-centric events, Thornton Park isn’t just a destination, it’s a lifestyle. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely brunch, exploring unique boutiques, or relaxing by the lake, Thornton Park captures the essence of Orlando’s culture and charm.

Invested heavily in the heart of this community, Verax Investments plays a vital role in preserving and enhancing its unique character. One of its key contributions is the Thornton Park Retail Center, a dynamic mixed-use development at the corner of Summerlin Avenue and East Central Boulevard. This bustling hub is home to beloved local establishments like Soco Restaurant, Jinya Ramen Bar, Starbucks, Artifact Candle, and more, offering both residents and visitors a taste of what makes Thornton Park so special.

Since 2014, Soco Restaurant has been at the forefront of Orlando’s culinary scene. Chef Richie’s innovative take on Southern Contemporary Cuisine has won accolades and loyal patrons who return for signature dishes like Duck Fat Fried Chicken & Waffles, Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Hot Honey, and Grilled Meatloaf on Lobster Mashed Potatoes. “Soco is all about creating memories,” Richie shares. “We’ve had the privilege of celebrating life’s milestones with our guests for ten years, and we look forward to many more.”

Q&A with Greg Richie, Executive Chef and Partner at Soco Restaurant

Q1: Soco is a beloved restaurant in Thornton Park. What makes the district so special to you?

Greg Richie: Thornton Park has a charm you don’t find everywhere—it’s a blend of old and new, a mix of locals and visitors. The proximity to Lake Eola adds to its allure. You get Gen Zers on dates, families out for Sunday brunch, and even bridal and baby shower groups looking to celebrate. There’s always an energy here that’s exciting and refreshing.

Q2: Soco is known for its Southern contemporary cuisine. How do you bring the community into your menu?

Greg Richie: At Soco, we emphasize seasonal and locally-sourced ingredients. We want the menu to reflect the community—its traditions, its diversity, and its creativity. Our dishes tell a story, and Thornton Park, with its unique vibe, is the perfect backdrop for that story.

Q3: The holidays just passed. What unique things did Soco do for this festive season?

Greg Richie: The holidays are an incredible time at Soco. We’ll have special menus with festive twists on our Southern classics, themed events like holiday cocktail nights, and of course, our warm and welcoming ambiance that makes every gathering feel special. Thornton Park itself gets into the spirit too, with the district hosting events that bring people together. It’s truly magical.

Q4: Thornton Park has seen changes over the years. What has stood out to you about its evolution?

Greg Richie: Thornton Park has always been about community, but over the years, it has grown into this vibrant, inclusive hub. The addition of more local businesses, events, and spaces like the Thornton Park Retail Center has elevated the area. It’s amazing to see people from all walks of life coming together here, whether for a leisurely dinner or a big celebration.

Q5: What does the future hold for Thornton Park and Soco?

Greg Richie: I see Thornton Park continuing to thrive as a destination for locals and visitors alike. As for Soco, we’re always looking at ways to innovate and connect with our guests. Whether it’s through our menu, our events, or partnerships with other local businesses, we’re committed to being a vital part of this community.
